Groin Ultrasound (Hernia)

During an inguinal ultrasound, pulses of high frequency sound waves are employed to examine the right and left groin area. This exam is effective in the diagnosis and assessment of conditions such as inguinal hernia and determine the causes of other groin related complaints such as lumps, pain and tenderness.

PATIENT INFORMATION AND PREPARATION

Special Instructions

  • Take all prescription medications as instructed
  • Your skin should be kept clean and free of body oils, moisturizers and powders
  • Your clothing should be lightweight, comfortable and suitable for easy access to the skin of the area in question
  • Please arrive at least 15 minutes in advance

WHAT TO EXPECT DURING YOUR EXAM

  • You may be asked to change into a gown, to give the sonographer better access to the skin of your left and right groin area
  • A warm, fragrance-free, hypoallergenic gel will be applied to the skin near your uterus and stomach
  • A wand-like transducer will be moved over the lubricated surface of your groin, in order to obtain images of your groin’s internal structures
  • Should a hernia be a concern, you will be asked to perform various breathing techniques in order for the sonographer too obtain better imagery
  • Some pressure may be applied with the wand, in order to obtain clearer imagery
  • You may be asked to indicate the area of concern by pointing out the lump or area of pain if it is localized to one spot as this will ensure that the correct area is properly assessed
  • You may be asked to stand or shift position during this exam, to help the sonographer obtain better imagery
  • The practitioner may sit and watch the monitor for some time, as this assessment requires some observation of the movements of structures within the groin
  • Once the sonographer is satisfied with the images obtained, you will be asked to alight from the exam table and get changed, if necessary
  • The radiologist may now choose to sit with you in the exam room, in order to discuss your results
  • You will now be free to leave

WHEN TO EXPECT THE RESULTS OF YOUR EXAM

Our radiologists will interpret your information and aim to forward the results to your doctor by the end of the next working day.
